The postpartum period is beautiful, messy and can be hard. It's like falling in love while you are too sleep deprived, sore and exhausted to fully appreciate it. And yet we do. It can be hard to remember that this is a sacred time to honour our body. We have just done something amazing. Just because women all over the world do it every day makes it no less wondrous. However, it is taxing on the body. The work of labour has been compared to running a marathon ( maybe three). But it is like running a marathon after months of sharing every meal, having your organs rearranged and increasing your blood volume by 50%.  The body needs to heal.

Plus many mammas are doing the work of recovery while also breastfeeding. Meaning there are continued demands on your body.
